Counselling is an opportunity to talk to someone who is impartial, in a safe and confidential environment. You may find that it is a relief to be able to share your most personal, intimate thoughts and feelings, when you don’t want to burden your friends and family.
It is also an opportunity to gain insight and self-awareness, in order to lead a more fulfilling life. Many people find it a positive, life-changing experience. I believe it is the best way of finding our authentic self and therefore the best GIFT we can give ourselves.
Before the first session: You would contact me via email, phone or using the contact page. We can have an informal chat to arrange a day and a time that suits us both. You may want to ask a few questions.
At the first session, I will assess you for suitability for counselling that I offer. It is also an opportunity for us to see if we want to work together. If we both agree, we can continue with subsequent sessions. I will explain about confidentiality, cancellation policy, and referrals if appropriate.
The sessions last 50 minutes and are usually weekly, on the same day and time each week. We will discuss how many sessions you would like or need.
During the session, I will ask you about your feelings, emotions, thoughts and behaviour patterns. I may delve deeper into your childhood to ascertain where a pattern was established. I may set you some work to take home with you, so that you can try them in between sessions.
Towards the end of counselling, we will work on an ending. I always like to encourage clients to mark the ending in a manner that suits them. This is an important part of the therapeutic work.
